Overview.

i-teria is a new take on networking & employment discovery. The app, driven by user-curated opportunities makes job searching and connections exceptionally personalized.

I led the end-to-end UX design for this product from user research, product strategy, prototyping, visual design deliverables, and more.

Background.

My peers and I had been actively job searching and noticed something...

As we go through these interviews and applying, there is this notion that we are getting picked or chosen by these companies as employees.

How come it never feels like we get to choose the right fit company for ourselves? Where we work will essentially be our second home so why is there less emphasis on looking for places that truly align with our values?

Problem.

Research.

I began to draw from research articles on the topic of networking, belonging, and community in the workplace–

The disconnect undermines the individual’s performance, their creativity and their ability and willingness to collaborate.

“People with fewer niche connections at work have a decreased sense of belonging and are less likely to identify with the organization.”

– Harvard Business Review

Competitive Analysis.

What were others doing?

I analyzed the 4 most popular networking apps and found that almost none of them had a personalization aspect to help the user find a community and feel a sense of belonging. This presented an opportunity for a solution.

User Interviews.

I wanted to hear from the users themselves...

To take on a user-centred approach in solving this problem, I conducted interviews with 12 individuals. I asked a range of catered questions to understand their professional goals, challenges they face and how digital products would help them navigate their concerns.

Common Themes + Findings.

Common Themes + Findings.

Common Themes + Findings.

Theme 1: Community

Being active in a community at work allows them to feel a sense of belonging.

Opportunity to engage in informal networking or social activities in and out of the workplace impacts job satisfaction and overall well-being.

Disconnect of internal support undermines the individual’s performance, creativity, and ability & willingness to collaborate.

Theme 2: Niche

Being able to discover colleagues with specific shared interests or career trajectories would enhance their workplace experience.

Interviewees had felt a strong sense of camaraderie when they found groups of specific niches (minorities, movements).

Lacking resources to foster connections with like-minded individuals.

Theme 3: Personalization

Needs to tailor networking efforts to align with individual career aspirations.

Networking interactions felt too generic or impersonal. Want to ensure personalized interactions remain authentic and meaningful.

Wants more freedom around showcasing skills, achievements, and aspirations for better exposure & discovery

User Personas.

Pain Points

  • Simply overwhelmed with where to start building connections as a new grad.

  • Tend to feel less respected in the workplace when age is revealed.

  • Such little resource for new grads/entry-level positions.

  • Difficult to find like-minded female support groups within finance and trading.

  • Hard to determine which company is the right fit for myself.

Pain Points

  • Feeling like work-life balance and needs are not being met at current company.

  • Feeling disconnected with colleagues & work community.

  • Find it challenging to reach out to people in a less business manner.

  • Wish to engage in informal networking/social activities in or out of the workplace but don’t know where to find them.

Design Direction.

Solution.

Design System.

Thinking about adaptability...

With various screen sizes and platforms being used, logos can't be designed with a one-size-fits-all approach anymore. Logos must be flexible in terms of size, intricacy, and arrangement to seamlessly adjust to their placement within different environments and contexts thus, I created three different responsive logos.

Takeaways.

If I had more time...

I would conduct usability testing with a full prototype to better iterate my designs based on accurate feedback.

What I learned...

Though we can't completely get rid of biases in UX, we can definitely be more attentive and work to overcome them. Through user research, I’ve realized that going forward, I should get into the habit of actively listening without adding my own opinions.

Am I aware of my own biases, and am I able to filter them as I do research? I found myself at times unintentionally showing confirmation bias, leading my interviewees toward the answer that I wanted them to give which contradicts my design morals. I could improve or avoid this issue by interviewing larger samples of users or people with no prior acquaintance.
